Starling Handbag!

October 2, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (12) Comments Feed

I'm back after another (long) blog silence!  Even though I work from home keeping up with my crafty projects & this little blog is not an easy affair. I try my best to manange my time but even then there are a few things which always lag behind and my blog is one of those poor things.

Lets get to the title of the post before something else drags my attention and I put this post in the drafts again! (Oh yeah I do that a lot!)

My affair with Starling Handbag started last year when I saw this for the first time here. It was then when I didn't have aluminium crochet hooks and all I know was how to make chains. Ahhhh poor days !

I had been dreaming about making this "kyuuto bag" since Alice released the pattern. Since my crochet skills are quite limited these crochet-a-long-video tutorials made by Alice for Starling Handbag were very helpful. This was one of the crochet projects I REALLY enjoyed working on.

Other intimidating tasks were to sew & attach the lining to the bag. I cannot say enough thanks to Alice for writing amazing tutorials for sewing & attaching the lining. I've learned so many new things while making the lining for the bag. The technique Alice showed to attach the lining is simply AWESOME. I mean its such a neat way of sewing fabric to your crocheted piece. I think now I have an idea about hand sewing the fabric backs to my cushions.

I could'nt come up with any super idea of embelishing my starling handbag but still I love that little flower on the bottom right of the bag. I love many embellishment ideas from Alice's Peep Shows but the simple bags Alice made with ecro color shown in the written pattern stayed on my mind. I think there is something special with Starling Handbag pattern when its made with ecro.

Here is a glimpse of the inside of the bag. I couldn't find magnetic snaps so I used the sew-on snaps. I think I want to try attaching a zip to my next bag. Lets see if my sewing skills allows me to do that.

Ahhhhh and I finished the post..... Yay......!! I will be waiting for your comments about my little starling!

Lazy Weekend & Couple of Recent House Projects

June 27, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (1) Comments Feed

Its quite unusual for me to feel lazy during the weekend. I'm mostly filled with lots of energy during my weekends. I usually work on my to-do-list on Friday night and then I'd just go crazy to chase down the tasks I had lain down for me.

But there are times when you need a break but that should also be planned otherwise you keep feeling guilty that you didn't do anything and I'm exactly in that kind of situation right now. This break was so unplanned and I couldn't even relaize it was a break & I'm supposed to feel relaxed !

I had finished some crochet & other projects during my blog break (which was also unplanned). So I thought I'd share them today.

Remember those cute granny squares I was working on way back in February ? Well they finally got turned into a cushion and I can proudly say I already have my first ever granny squares cushion!

My little cakey boy sitting with the granny!

I sewed up a envelope cushion and attached the granny bit on the front. This idea actually given to me by Alice (aka futuregirl, thanks Alice!). I machine sewed the granny part to the cushion cover as I didn't have any further patience to hand sew it. My machine was in a good mood that day and so did a nice job.

Oh and it just occurred to me I should have photographed the back of the cushion also!

Another project which really made me feel proud was rescuing this chair from our junk room. It was ready to be thrown away by my brother but I took hold of it. I painted it black & then reupholstered it with this cute cotton fabric.

I've recently added a support bar on the chair. I'm waiting for my new cushion to be ready and thats going to find home on this chair. Its my official sewing chair now!

I feel so proud about this chair. I feel so flattered when guests say "hey you painted it yourself and you also put the fabric ?"..... and I very proudly say yes I did it all!! You know it gives you such a nice sense of gain when you take something out of your junk room and make it pretty enough to give it place in your room..!

Oh I can't believe it I managed to write this whole post. I was feeling so deadfully lazy & tired. But I did it...!

Hopefully I will be back soon to share more things here...

Make yourself a Foldover Pouch !

March 8, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (3) Comments Feed

Foldover Pouch

Why ?... because its quick to make & cute enough to love & keep- I followed this easy & well written tutorial.

Foldover Pouch Closeup

If you are not as dumb as me it will hardly take you an hour to complete this pouch. I took more than 4 hours as I did silly things along the way.

The front topstitch is still bugging me, I waited for a day if I can live with it but I guess not, so I'm going to redo the front topstitch. Interstingly the back topstich is quite straight , but since I had attached the loop already so sides could not be swapped.

And yes those grannies you are seeing in the background are still work in progress. I'm looking for a way to attach cotton fabric as back of my granny cushion. But first I got to do 4 more grannies to complete the front of my cushion and then around a hundred of tails are to be weaved in and the thought of weaving this many tails haunts me!

So what you are making these days ? Most probably something complementing the Spring..!

I Love Polka Dots, Ginghams & Dew Drop Bag !

February 22, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (1) Comments Feed

I love my dew drop bag even though I made lots of mistakes while sewing it!  I recently developed a special feel for Gingham Fabrics; they make me feel happy, cozy & inspired. And I don't remember for how long I'm in love with polka dots ? (Btw who's not ?!?)

Recently MyLittleCeePod added my bag in her Dew Drop Bag Gallery on Flickr. I didn't know lots of girls are also loving this cute Dew Drop Bag Pattern by Michelle

Only one thing had been bothering me since I made it and that was I didn't take any decent photos of my dew drop bag. I tried to take a few the other day but again I wasn't quite successful.

But I'm gona try once again as I would love to see a nice photo of polkas, ginghams & dew drops together !
