Flowers in the Snow !

July 25, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (7) Comments Feed

At last I'm here to blog about my sunburst granny square cushion. It took me a month to complete it but as long as I managed to complete it time doesn't matter... right ?

I'm certainly in love with this one. I joined the squares with "as you go" method and it was a breeze to learn from this Tutorial. So say a big Yay! for me because I finally learned to join my squares as I go.

I still need to put some more ball fibre to make it squishy to my heart's content. I dont' like those empty corners so they really need to be filled up more.

Working up the back of the cushion was sort of a big issue for me. I didn't want to attach it to the fabric cushion cover this time. Having buttons on the back of the crochet cushions is quite practical as you can take out the cushion off easily when you want to wash it. What I did for my previous cushions was sewed up the envelope cushion covers and machine stitched the crocheted bits on front. They are easier to wash this way. But my machine is not always in a good mood and I didn't want to take a risk for this one. I've seen people attach their crocheted part with the fabric cushion cover by hand sewing but I wonder how wonderful people they are; they have lots of patience and good hand sewing skills both at the same time!

If I make it again I would use a smaller hook. Basically you should use smaller hook for granny squares. I wanted to block the cushion before working up the back but then again my lazy soul didn't allow me to do that.

There are more cushion & pillow shows coming soon so stay tuned ;)

Update-

Sorry friends I forgot to mention that I used Yvonne's pattern to make the circles and then joined them by following Sarah's tutorial.

Lazy Weekend & Couple of Recent House Projects

June 27, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (1) Comments Feed

Its quite unusual for me to feel lazy during the weekend. I'm mostly filled with lots of energy during my weekends. I usually work on my to-do-list on Friday night and then I'd just go crazy to chase down the tasks I had lain down for me.

But there are times when you need a break but that should also be planned otherwise you keep feeling guilty that you didn't do anything and I'm exactly in that kind of situation right now. This break was so unplanned and I couldn't even relaize it was a break & I'm supposed to feel relaxed !

I had finished some crochet & other projects during my blog break (which was also unplanned). So I thought I'd share them today.

Remember those cute granny squares I was working on way back in February ? Well they finally got turned into a cushion and I can proudly say I already have my first ever granny squares cushion!

My little cakey boy sitting with the granny!

I sewed up a envelope cushion and attached the granny bit on the front. This idea actually given to me by Alice (aka futuregirl, thanks Alice!). I machine sewed the granny part to the cushion cover as I didn't have any further patience to hand sew it. My machine was in a good mood that day and so did a nice job.

Oh and it just occurred to me I should have photographed the back of the cushion also!

Another project which really made me feel proud was rescuing this chair from our junk room. It was ready to be thrown away by my brother but I took hold of it. I painted it black & then reupholstered it with this cute cotton fabric.

I've recently added a support bar on the chair. I'm waiting for my new cushion to be ready and thats going to find home on this chair. Its my official sewing chair now!

I feel so proud about this chair. I feel so flattered when guests say "hey you painted it yourself and you also put the fabric ?"..... and I very proudly say yes I did it all!! You know it gives you such a nice sense of gain when you take something out of your junk room and make it pretty enough to give it place in your room..!

Oh I can't believe it I managed to write this whole post. I was feeling so deadfully lazy & tired. But I did it...!

Hopefully I will be back soon to share more things here...

Look what I did with my circles..

I made a (almost) cushion !

Well well I can now join my sqaures as I go.. And I must say its quite enjoyable to join/make your squares this way. I've also noticed it workes up quite quickly.

Can you see that last square is missing ? oh yes one last square needs to be joined and then I will start convincing myself to sew up these tons of tails. I wish I had a little sister or friend around who could sew up these tails for me, provided they didn't hate to do it as much as I do. But I guess it would be easier for me to convince them than to convince myself for this boring, boring & boring task...!

I can't stop loving my new yarn colors, I almost want to eat them! During this heat around, they look like scoops of colorful ice-cream to me. Oh I love you soo much my sweet sweet new yarn! They make me happy all day when I see them, they keep me inspired during all day, they invite me to make something beautiful with them, they invite me to play with them... I think they are my new freinds..... hellow my new friends, thank you to make me feel so happy everyday !

I'm wondering what is making you happy these days to keep the heat away & to bring the joy around ????

Hellow World !

How bad I'm here after two months. I know I know I'm not a good blogger! Life has been a strange roller coaster of responsibilities & emotions during the past 3 months. I did manage to contunue with my sewing & crochet but I just couldn't manage to blog about my projects. I had been active on Flickr and found some new freinds there during this time and I'm really excited about my new flickr contacts!

So..... I'm here just for a quick post to let my two precious subscribers know that I'm very much alive and around!

I have so much queued up to blog about and I hope to finally start showing you all the projects I had been upto so far.

As blog post without photographs is not a good idea so I'm leaving you with these two photos of my new cushion in progress. I'm feeling very peachy to see all the colors of my yarn & circles going so well with my new rug. Awwwww I'm just LOVIN' it !!!!!!!

I see you all soon.... (atleast I hope so !)

Sweet. Swingy. And Springy

April 8, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (4) Comments Feed

Am I happy ? Oh yes so much! I finally made something by following a Magazine Pattern. Last year in April when I started learning crochet, the most intimidating task was to understand crochet patterns. And I thought that would take me ages when I will finally be able to understand & follow patterns from magazines.

I'm happy it took me only a year to finally have my crochet project done from a magazine. This pretty dress pattern is from Crochet Today May/June 2009 issue.

When I made my first girly dress a few months back, one of my friends requested to make one for her daughter also. I tried to adjust the pattern for a 2 year old but couldn't managed to do so. So I started looking for some other easy & cute girly dress patterns and this one finally got my attention. I instantly decided to give it a try. Though the pattern's description says its a quick dress but I didn't find it quick. Its an easy pattern but doesn't work up quickly since each row of skirt involves several different rounds to work.

Though it was time consuming but the finished dress makes it totally worth it as this dress turned out to be one of my favorite projects so far. I wish cute Maha & her Mommy also find it lovely & cute!

I would love to know what do you think of this dress ! And let me know if anyone of you have tried this pattern.

I hope you all are having a productive & calm weekend! (mine was quite unmanaged & listless!)

I'm loving...

In the middle of all the mess in my home these days, I'm loving, *finally* blocked grannies, pink spray bottle, crocheted cube to hold my WIP grannies & *just cleaned* pin-cushion

Make yourself a Foldover Pouch !

March 8, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (3) Comments Feed

Foldover Pouch

Why ?... because its quick to make & cute enough to love & keep- I followed this easy & well written tutorial.

Foldover Pouch Closeup

If you are not as dumb as me it will hardly take you an hour to complete this pouch. I took more than 4 hours as I did silly things along the way.

The front topstitch is still bugging me, I waited for a day if I can live with it but I guess not, so I'm going to redo the front topstitch. Interstingly the back topstich is quite straight , but since I had attached the loop already so sides could not be swapped.

And yes those grannies you are seeing in the background are still work in progress. I'm looking for a way to attach cotton fabric as back of my granny cushion. But first I got to do 4 more grannies to complete the front of my cushion and then around a hundred of tails are to be weaved in and the thought of weaving this many tails haunts me!

So what you are making these days ? Most probably something complementing the Spring..!

What to make first with my cotton yarn ?

Pot holders ? Dish Cloths ? or  A cute bag for the summer ?

Oh and I have these bigger hooks now to finally embark on some quick afghan or rug project!

February Mug Collection

February 25, 2010 Posted by shumaila Comments (4) Comments Feed

I love collecting tea & coffee mugs. I love to have my tea in a mug which appeals me that very moment. I don't know how to explain it but there is a feel for every mug I have. Every month when I go to shopping in my local market the first thing I look for are mugs.

I srsly need to think to store my mugs at some safe place as I have already lost a few.  Had my brothers been a bit careful & responsible creatures I would have  hanged my mugs under the top kitchen cabinets without any fear.

My mom is not going to give me some space in her kitchen cabinets as she thinks it might encourage me to buy more! But I'm gona buy more even mom doesn't let me store my mugs in her cabinets =D
